NSW: More funds needed for new meningococcal test - pathologists
Australian pathologists say a little-used DNA-based test can diagnose meningococcaldisease in two hours and they want more funding so the test can be more widely used.
The so-called polymerase chain reaction -- or PCR -- test is already used to test forHIV and Hepatitis C.
Chief executive of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, Dr DEBRA GRAVES,says PCR testing is only used at one or two laboratories in Australia.
She says the group will approach the government about increasing PCR testing.
